James Taylor is one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the 20th century. Emerging in the late 1960s, he became a defining voice of the singer-songwriter movement with his introspective lyrics, gentle acoustic guitar style, and warm baritone voice.

Taylor’s self-titled debut album (James Taylor, 1968) was released on The Beatles’ Apple label but did not initially achieve major commercial success. His breakthrough came with the 1970 album Sweet Baby James, which featured the hit single Fire and Rain.  The song became a efining anthem of the era.

Throughout the 1970s, Taylor became a staple of American radio with songs like:
